Sera Monastery is one of the "great three" Gelug university monasteries of Tibet, The other two are Ganden Monastery and Drepung Monastery. The origin of its name is attributed to a fact that during construction, the hill behind the monastery was covered with blooming wild roses.

色拉傑寺院是西藏 "三大" 格魯大學寺院之一, 另外兩個則是甘登寺和德都蓬寺。鑒於在建築期間, 修道院後面的山上被盛開的野生玫瑰給覆蓋著，因此名字的起源便歸因於此。
